“a new fall could be fatal”; Belgian must miss the Giro d’Italia

After a serious fall during the Dwars Door Vlaanderen, Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), will face a long period of rehabilitation, which will keep him away from important competitions such as the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and possibly the Giro d’Italia .

Belgian sports doctor and former cyclist Kris Van der Mieren described Van Aert’s injury as a “polytrauma”, comparable to injuries suffered in serious traffic accidents. The Belgian cyclist suffered a broken collarbone, seven fractured ribs and a fractured sternum.

The Extent of the Injuries

According to Van der Mieren, Van Aert’s injuries are similar to damage to a vehicle after an accident. People often focus on visible external damage, but internal damage is also serious and requires attention. “We only see these things in serious traffic accidents”, highlighted the doctor.

Van der Mieren also expressed concern about possible internal damage not visible immediately after the accident. “Further tests should show whether there is further damage,” he added.

Prognosis and Recovery

Van Aert is currently hospitalized in Herentals and has not yet undergone surgery. Most of his fractures, like his cracked sternum and broken ribs, are usually treated with rest.

“A crack in the sternum heals on its own, but it takes time,” Vandermieren explained.

A broken rib also heals spontaneously. “But of course you have to keep breathing. Therefore, the fracture line is always moving, so it does not heal easily. You have to count on it for 3 to 6 weeks.”

Mental and Hormonal Impact

In addition to the physical injuries, Vandermieren highlighted the emotional and hormonal impact the fall will have on Van Aert. “Van Aert will be completely hormonally destabilized. The ‘neurohormones,’ which make you feel good, have been shaken,” he said.

Premature return can be fatal

Van Aert’s premature return to the bike is considered dangerous, especially due to his broken ribs. “In the event of a further fall, these broken ribs can cut the lung membrane like a razor blade and cause the lung to collapse,” warned Vandermieren.

He also highlighted that during training, Van Aert will have to be cautious and will likely focus on roller training to avoid additional risks.

Perspectives for the Future

Regarding Van Aert’s participation in the Giro d’Italia, which takes place from May 4 to 26, Vandermieren believes it seems “impossible” at this point. “It is important to review his medical situation week after week”, concluded the doctor.
