The sad comment of a Benfica presidential candidate about the FC Porto elections

-

Everything that happens at our neighbor’s house is always better than ours. There’s a saying out there that I don’t remember now, but it goes by these words. We are never happy with what happens in our house and we look at other people’s houses and always find something better.

Pinto da Costa was defeated after 42 years. Was it democracy? Someone who has been in power for 42 years, being marked by golden whistles, fruits and so many other nonsense, cannot even raise his hand, let alone give a slap in the face of democracy. They are the same ones who gave Villas-Boas the victory.

While Madureira’s Woman wrote Hypocrites, the defeated candidate in Benfica’s last elections wrote: “Today we were slapped with democracy”. A regrettable comment from someone who wants to fuel disputes, without any reason to complain. But let’s get to the facts.

After the elections that gave 80% of the votes to Villas-Boas, there is a narrative about the number of votes that the oldest Benfica fans have and that the intention is to put an end to this. It is legitimate for it to be discussed and for the partners to ultimately decide what they want. Nothing against.

But there is an error in most of the comments on the narrative that is being released. That the results of the elections would be different if each member had one vote. So let’s see if it would really be like what some want to propagate.

Total voters: 40,085 voters / Total votes (1,5,20 and 50 votes): 808,298 votes

List A: 33,754 voters / 682,841 votes / 84.48%
List B: 5,043 voters / 98,923 votes / 12.24%
Whites: 1,071 voters / 21,967 votes / 2.2%
Nulls: 217 voters / 4,567 votes / 0.56%

If each partner had 1 vote, the current president would still win with 84.27% against 12.57% won by Benitez.
So where is the slap? Why did they arrest a cheerleader to ensure that everyone voted without problems? At Benfica there was no intimidation.
Why did they call the police to make sure the votes were counted correctly? In the elections in which Benitez participated, the votes were counted 3 times.
Why did both Villas-Boas and Pinto da Costa engage in constant personal attacks with one person mortgaging the club’s future by taking measures during the election period? It didn’t happen at Benfica.

If you want to go with Vieira’s elections, we also have the data.

Total voters: 38,102 voters / Total votes 753,578(1,5,20 and 50 votes) votes):

LIST A: 22,787 voters / 471,660 votes / 62.59%
LIST B: 14,337 voters / 261,574 votes / 34.71%
LIST D: 603 voters / 12,341 votes / 1.64%
Whites: 375 voters / 8,003 votes / 1.06%

If each member had one vote, Luís Filipe Vieira would win with 59.8% against Noronha Lopes’ 37.6%.

Given all this, I find it regrettable that someone who had more than 5 thousand people vote for him, in the last Benfica elections, comes to talk about slaps on democracy. Respect the wishes of the majority of Benfica’s members and what I want you to run for in 2025. Only in this way can we guarantee that Benfica remains democratic.
