Important victories

This edition of BNews is dedicated to Benfica’s sporting activity on Sunday.

1. A penta triumph

After a hard-fought opening set that saw Sporting lose their advantage, Benfica was stronger than their opponent and won the 3rd game of the National Championship final by 3-1, now one victory away from their fifth championship. The next match is on Wednesday, the 1st, at Pavilhão João Rocha.

Marcel Matz considers it to be “an indisputable victory, at home, playing well, with the support of the public”. The Benfica coach praises the Benfiquistas: “Now we have an away game, we will try to win, but if we can’t win there, we have one more here with the support of our fans. When we play here the atmosphere is sensational for us.”

two. One step away from recovery

Played until the last seconds, the first challenge of the play-off final of the women’s National Basketball Championship was won by Benfica, 51-53, against União Sportiva. A new Benfica triumph means a return to the top of the sport. The next game is on May 1st, in Luz, at 3pm.

Eugénio Rodrigues says: “The only responsible attitude of a team that wants to win things is to start from scratch and forget this game. Treat the game on day 1 as if it were the first game of the play-off.”

Marta Martins calls for the presence of the Benfica fans: “We are one victory away from the title and the next game is at our home. We are very happy. But there is still a long way to go. We hope for a full hall and to be celebrating together at the end of the next game.”

3. Excellent route

Benfica’s women’s handball team fought until the last whistle to qualify for the final of the EHF European Cup Women, but failed to add another chapter to the historic journey already made. The result of the 2nd leg, in Luz, against Iuventa Michalovce was 30-30, insufficient for Benfica’s intentions due to the 30-28 in favor of the Slovaks recorded in the first meeting.

João Alexandre Florêncio praises the team: “I feel great pride in the journey these athletes took, we were one step away from the final. This team, in three years, started winning national titles, in eight possible we won seven, and in the second European participation We were on the verge of a final… There’s nothing to point out! We lacked a bit of experience, of maturity, of knowing how to play at home with our fans, which is a big responsibility, and we acknowledged that at the beginning of the game.”

4. Unfair draw

Benfica’s B team drew 1-1 against Tondela. Nélson Veríssimo highlights the injustice of the result: “We had a fantastic second half. Obviously we are sad that we didn’t win the three points, we created enough opportunities to win the game.”

5. Other results

Benfica’s women’s roller hockey team won, 1-9, on their trip to Sanjoanense. The U15s won, 0-1, in Tondela. And the women’s water polo team started the play-offs with a victory against CA Pacense (5-17)
