MotoGP made an unbelievable mistake this weekend, when it announced that the Spanish Grand Prix would have broken the championship’s historic attendance record, with almost 300,000 spectators present in the stands at the Jerez circuit throughout the weekend. With those numbers, the Spanish race largely beat the previous record, set at 278,805 by Le Mans, last year. The problem was that the calculations were wrong… by more than 100 thousand supporters!

On Monday night, upon realizing the mistake, the championship organization made a correction. “There was a miscalculation in fan numbers and, amidst the enthusiasm and celebration of the atmosphere at the event, we published incorrect figures during the race. We are sorry for the error. The correct attendance figure for the weekend was 181,289, which does not represent a new record, but one that makes this Grand Prix the best in Jerez in practically a decade”, read the MotoGP note.
