“Dirty Portuguese”: French mayor convicted of insulting a Portuguese descendant – World

The insults took place after the approval of the budget for the Tours Val de Loire Metropolitan Area, in France, on April 4 last year. During a drink, Frédéric Augis, president of the body, attacked the Portuguese descendant Cédric de Oliveira, mayor of Fondettes and vice-president of the metropolitan area.

Irritated by Oliveira’s oppositional stance, he began by saying: “You are nothing more than a small vice-president.” Then he said: “You are nothing more than a dirty Portuguese person.” The expression in French, “sale portugais”, a recurrent racist insult in the past, was heard by the target and several witnesses.

The case was reported days later by Cédric de Oliveira, in an open letter to Augis. “These racist insults are deeply offensive and should have no place in any debate at any time,” he argued. He also wrote a letter to City Hall that led to the opening of a case at the Tours Correctional Court. Augis wrote to Oliveira to apologize, but was sentenced on March 11 to a suspended sentence of ineligibility for one year, and a fine of 12 thousand euros, for “insulting a person who holds public authority” and “public insult of a racial nature by a person holding public authority.”DETAILS
