Three-time champion Manchester City, with Erling Haaland in the spotlight, thrashed Wolverhampton today in the 36th round of the English Football League (5-1) and restored the one-point gap over leaders Arsenal.

With Bernardo Silva in the starting line-up and Matheus Nunes starting in the 79th minute, the ‘citizens’ had a practically one-way game, in which Norwegian striker Haaland scored four goals, in the 12th and 45+3 minutes, both from penalties, and at 35 and 54.

Haaland also reinforced his status as the Premier’s top scorer, now with 25 goals, five more than Cole Palmer (Chelsea) and Alexander Isak (Newcastle), and with a total of 36 across all competitions.

In the game, Julian Alvarez, who replaced the Norwegian, also scored, in the 85th minute, while Hwang Hee-Chan scored the Wolves’ goal, after a poor approach by goalkeeper Ederson, in the 53rd minute.

Wolverhampton, which remains in a quiet 11th position, had the Portuguese José Sá, Nelson Semedo and Toti on the field.

At the top of the League, Arsenal, who today beat Bournemouth at home (3-0), has 83 points, while Manchester City has 82, but one less game played, still on the 34th round, to be played at the club’s home ground. Tottenham, on May 14th.

In other games today on the 36th round, Nuno Espírito Santo’s Nottingham Forest achieved an important victory at home to already relegated Sheffield United, 3-1 and turning the score around.

A triumph that leaves Nottingham in 17th, one place above the relegation zone, with three more points than Luton, and five for Burnley, with two rounds to go, decisive for these three teams in the fight to escape the demotion.

Burnley is the one in the worst situation, after today being beaten at home by Newcastle (4-1), with the Magpies in the European zone, with one more game and two more points than Manchester United and five than Chelsea, teams that will still play their respective games in the round.

In Brentford, with the home team safe, in 16th, Fulham (12th), under Marco Silva and with João Palhinha on the field, came out with a goalless draw.

The journey continues on Sunday with the games Brighton-Aston Villa, Chelsea-West Ham and Liverpool-Tottenham, and concludes on Monday with the clash Crystal Palace-Manchester United.
