JOsé Mourinho gave, this Wednesday, an extensive Korean EA Sports interview, in which, among other topics, he confessed his regret over a decision he made not long ago when he was still working for AS Roma.
The Setubalense confirmed that he rejected the invitation made by the leader of the Portuguese Football Federation, Fernando Gomes, to succeed Fernando Santos after the 2022 World Cup. Negotiations between the two parties did not reach a successful conclusion and Mourinho ended up remaining at AS Roma, where he left in January this year. Now, the coach confesses that he should have accepted this offer, and the place ended up being occupied by Roberto Martínez.
“The most normal thing would have been for me to accept the invitation. I had the opportunity to join the Portuguese national team twice, but it wasn’t the right time for me. I was emotional when I didn’t accept the last offer, because I decided to stay at AS Roma and I think that I made a mistake. Because now Portugal has a fantastic team, one of the best, among the top five, I knew that, but I felt a great connection with AS Roma, with the fans, so I didn’t want to make that decision”, he said. the Portuguese technician, quoted by the Italian portal Calciomercato.
“Portugal’s opportunity arose twice, but I believe a third will arise and I will take advantage of it. I hope the next generation will be as strong as this one”, he continued.
In the same interview, José Mourinho spoke about his time at AS Roma, praising the work he did for the Italian club.
“The two finals with AS Roma were the most difficult to reach. Perhaps the Europa League with Manchester United was also very difficult. Because they were two teams that were in a very difficult situation when I arrived”, he highlighted.
“Some coaches are perhaps smarter and more intelligent and therefore choose the right job with the right conditions to be successful. I need to always be working, to feel like I’m doing something and that I’m helping. I like challenges, even if they are sometimes unfair, because I cannot be expected to win trophies when my team is not the strongest”, he concluded.
