«I have no doubt that Matheus Nunes will pay Rúben Amorim»

Rúben Amorim did what seemed impossible and unfeasible. After one very turbulent period In the club’s history – attack on Alcochete, division between fans, Varandas’ early days as president -, the current Sporting coach was a strong (and bold) bet by Frederico Varandas and it didn’t take long to bear fruit.

After being close to Benfica, Amorim went to SC Braga – he led the main team for 13 matches – and, shortly afterwards, he began to write history in Alvalade. After six victories in the first 11 games with Sporting, Amorim experienced a hecatomb in Europe and, from then on, walked smoothly towards a historic title.

19 years laterthe lion became king again and ended a period of dominance FC Porto – SL Benfica which, between 2002 and 2019, were the only champion clubs in Portugal.

With 85 points, Sporting reached the throne and, three seasons later, lifted the champion trophy again. This trophy, however, may have even more historical contours.

With 84 points, Sporting 23-24 is close to surpassing the club’s best ever record – the 86 points from Jorge Jesus in 2015/2016. Amorim, after the victory against Portimonense – and even before being crowned champion – assumed the desire to break the record, something that will give the coach «some pleasure».

«We do the math as the season progresses, we try to find goals to go after everything. The record belongs to Mister Jorge Jesus and it’s always good to beat the record of someone who had a lot of influence on my growth as a player. It gives me some pleasure to break this record,” he said at a press conference.

In 2015/2016, Jorge Jesus – in technical command of the lions – reached a remarkable mark (86), but still insufficient to surpass Rui Vitória’s Benfica’s 88. A season marked by the defeat at home against rivals Benfica – the moment of Benfica’s turning point in the League – and by the «no night» by Bryan Ruiz who missed an open goal.

Now, in 2024, JJ’s former pupil at Benfica and Belenenses – he was the coach with whom Amorim played most times – is about to surpass the teacher.

Rúben Amorim has two games left in the championship and needs three points to surpass 86 points, and only a catastrophe can prevent Sporting’s best-ever scoring title in the League.

A symbolic title that will be another on the CV of the 39-year-old coach who has already won five trophies with Sporting.
