O Bayer Leverkusen once again avoided their first defeat of the season, this Thursday, at home to AS Roma (2-2), qualifying for the Europa League final, thanks to a favorable 4-2 aggregate. The duel against Atalanta will take place on May 22nd, in Dublin, with Benfica supporting the German champions in order to qualify directly for the group stage in the Champions League.
Needing to recover from a two-goal deficit, the Italian team managed to open the scoring at the Bay Arena, on the brink of half-time, when Leandro Paredes was responsible for converting a penalty into a goal, in the 43rd minute.
The tie was relaunched and José Mourinho’s former team – now coached by De Rossi – repeated the ‘formula’ to score again, with Paredes’ double penalty, in the 66th minute, leaving everything the same in the tie.
However, within the last ten minutes, the possibilities of extra time were no longer on the table with two goals from Xabi Alonso’s team. Mancini’s own goal (82′) left the German champions slightly calmer and, when the first defeat of the season was in sight, Stanisic appeared in the right place, at 90+7′, to make it 2-2 against the team from Portuguese players Rui Patrício, Renato Sanches and João Costa – the first two did not leave the bench.
The unbeaten run continues (already at 49 games) and Bayer Leverkusen is, therefore, in the final of the Europa League, where they will face Atalanta, on May 22nd, in Dublin.
