Microsoft announced on Tuesday (19) the hiring of DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead Big Tech’s consumer AI division. Thus, the British researcher and entrepreneur will work alongside fellow Briton Karén Simonyan in the new division named Microsoft AI — Suleyman will be the CEO and Simonyan will be the chief scientist of the venture.

Copilot, Bing and Edge on Suleyman’s team

It didn’t take long for Suleyman to go to X (formerly Twitter) and announce the news. According to the professional, he will become the CEO of the Redmond company’s artificial intelligence division and will take care of technology-related products and research — this includes Microsoft Edge, Bing and Copilot.

“It’s been an incredible journey, with much more to come. Thank you everyone for your support. Things really are just beginning,” he highlighted in the publication.

It is important to highlight that Suleyman founded DeepMind in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg as a company to develop and research AI technologies. The company was acquired by Google, MS’s rival, in 2014. The British businessman was hired to head the AI area at Gigante das Buscas in 2019 and stayed there until 2022.

When he left Google DeepMind, Suleyman joined Karén Simonyan to found the startup Inflection AI, which works with generative artificial intelligence technology.

Microsoft invests heavily in AI

This is another step that the Redmond company takes in investments related to artificial intelligence. Big Tech has already released GPT-4 Turbo for free on Copilot to better serve users, in addition to blocking sexual and violent terms in the generation of images with the aim of further strengthening security filters on the services.

With the addition of Mustafa Suleyman in charge of a new dedicated AI division, MS appears to reinforce interest in the technology. Despite the news in MS’s “chairs”, no new initiative in this regard was revealed by the company.
