‘Stellar Blade’. The preview of the new and (promising) PS5 exclusive

-

A PlayStation will launch a new exclusive for PlayStation 5 in April in the form of ‘Stellar Blade’, a new action game produced by the studio Shift Up Corporation, from South Korea, and which should be able to ‘bring out’ some smiles and strong emotions from fans of the genre.

However, before this game could even hit stores, PlayStation Portugal sent Notícias ao Minuto a code that allowed us to have first contact with the game. This first contact took the form of a playable demonstration, which will be available to all players next Friday, March 29th.

As an ‘appetizer’ for what is to come, the demo of ‘Stellar Blade’ allows us to draw some positive impressions. As we are fans of action games, ‘Stellar Blade’ looks like a mix of games like ‘Nier: Automata’ with some design ‘sensibilities’ coming from FromSoftware games (‘Dark Souls’, ‘Elden Ring’, etc).

The ‘Stellar Blade’ demo takes place in the opening moments of the game when humanity tries to regain control of an Earth devastated and occupied by the alien race Naytiba. The protagonist is Eve and is part of a squad sent to fight against aliens on the ground, later heading to a devastated city that is considered the last bastion of humans remaining on the surface. Along the way, Eve is accompanied by a human named Adam who controls a small flying robot.

The opening scenes of ‘Stellar Blade’ will certainly leave no one indifferent, providing the kind of eye-popping opening spectacle that (once) would certainly have been used as a next-generation technical demo. Graphically speaking, the game seems to take advantage of the PlayStation 5 to offer graphics rich in detail where not even dozens of explosions and NPCs running around the scene can slow down the pace. If the Shift Up studio managed to offer these types of scenarios in the first few hours, we are interested in knowing where Eve will head next.

As ‘Stellar Blade’ is an action game, the gameplay and combat will certainly be essential points in convincing fans of the genre. Initial impressions may leave the idea that ‘Stellar Blade’ is the type of game that can move forward by constantly pressing the attack button but, in truth, this notion could not be further from the truth.

‘Stellar Blade’ does offer strong emotions, acrobatic movements and combinations that will make you remember, but it requires a much more careful approach due to the positioning of enemies. Faithful to the tradition created by FromSoftware games, the player will find some recording points in the scenario where they can improve Eve’s attributes, skills and respective sword. However, if they decide to rest and recover at these points, the enemies previously faced will return and you will have to deal with them again.

Despite this more careful approach, as soon as the player enters into battle with the monstrosities that are the Naytiba, it will be easy to see that ‘Stellar Blade’ is capable of keeping the pace of combat high thanks to successive attacks, ‘dodges’ and ‘parries’ – the latter are necessary if you want to bring the enemy to a state of vulnerability that you can (and should) take advantage of to launch a more powerful attack.

The ‘Stellar Blade’ demo is generous in terms of what it allows to experiment, letting players explore the initial area of the city where the beginning of the game takes place and even face two bosses. One of them even takes place at a later stage of the game, when the player has more skills at his disposal and provides an (appreciated) added dose of challenge.

After playing this demo, we were certainly more eager to see if Shift Up has what it takes to establish itself in the action game genre. From what we’ve seen so far, it certainly has the conditions to do so.

‘Stellar Blade’ is scheduled to be released exclusively on PlayStation 5 on April 26th. See some images from ‘Stellar Blade’ in the gallery above.
