The multinational already does this in the EU, but will adopt the measure on a global scale, given the possibility of regulators imposing a fine for unfair competition.

Microsoft should move forward with the global sale of Teams separately from Office, in order to avoid possible fines that could arise from regulators, if the two tools were sold together.

The decision means that the technological multinational will adopt the policy that it has already been using in the European Union (EU) throughout the world for six months. At the time, the purpose was to avoid a possible fine from the European organization, as it could consider that a situation of unfair competition would be at stake. The company now chooses to expand the measure across the globe.

It should be noted that the European Commission is investigating the connection between Office and Teams, both owned by Microsoft. The investigations began after a complaint from Slack, a platform developed by Salesforce that competes with Teams.

Remember that Teams was added to Office 365 in 2017, having replaced Skype. According to rivals’ complaints, selling the two products in one package allows for an unfair disadvantage that favors Microsoft.
