The console will remain faithful to the hybrid nature of the first model, although there may be important differences in the way it operates.

If there’s something that console players don’t like, it’s that with each new hardware, games change. This means that, often, the hundreds, or thousands, of euros invested in games are wasted because a new console does not support the old games. Fortunately, this has changed a lot in recent years. If Xbox had already offered backwards compatibility for some time, the truth is that, with the PlayStation 5, Sony started to offer this same backwards compatibility. Now, and if we take into consideration what is being advanced, the next Nintendo Switch 2 (or whatever other name the console will have) will have support for playing games on the current console.

The information is being provided by the Chinese newspaper BiliBili, which reveals some information they claim was obtained from an “inside source.” Some of them had already been the subject of previous rumors, such as those relating to new generation controllers, which should be larger and equipped with a convenient magnetic attachment system. To be honest, backwards compatibility itself has been talked about for a few months, and now these rumors have gained new life: according to the source, the physical slot of the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the cartridges of the first Switch. Conversely, the new model’s cartridges cannot be used on the Switch 1. Furthermore, the technical gap between the two models will be considerable, to the point of not allowing Switch 2 games to work on the parent.

From what we know, backwards compatibility will also be guaranteed with titles purchased in digital format: although the source does not go into the merits of the issue, it is likely that users will simply have to download their games again on the new console.

Backward compatibility coming with Nintendo Switch 2

The new Nintendo Switch 2 should be equipped with a slightly larger screen – LCD type, the OLED variant may arrive later – and decidedly more powerful hardware. From time to time there were rumors about the support of some features of the GeForce RTX 40, but ultimately the heart of the console will be a customized version of an NVIDIA chip. The console will remain faithful to the hybrid nature of the first model, although there may be important differences in the way it operates. Initially there was talk of a launch to take place at the end of 2024, but Nintendo – which is preparing to meet all initial demand – may have rescheduled this launch for the first quarter of 2025.
