GTA 5 It was launched in 2013, but remains firm and strong as a bestseller, gaining versions for three different generations of consoles. The Nintendo Switch ended up being left out of this party, but modders who had access to the game’s source code managed, miraculously, to make it Grand Theft Auto 5 run on the Nintendo console.

The code used was the same one obtained during the huge data leak that Rockstar suffered in early 2023, the same one that also brought images and details about the yet-to-be-announced GTA 6, including videos of the Alpha version of the game. And it was based on this stolen source code that modders started a project to try to create a port of Grand Theft Auto 5 for Nintendo’s hybrid console.

GTA 5 running (poorly) on Switch

Just a few months after the leak, the port was presented showing part of the first mission, in which Michael and Trevor participate in a bank robbery in which everything goes wrong, but which sets the game’s plot in motion.

This would be incredible for Nintendo Switch owners if it weren’t for the console’s limitations. From the video released on the profile, the port’s performance is poor.

The SuperStar South group profile on X (formerly Twitter) published the excerpt and revealed that the version was running on the console in portable mode and without overclocking, which considerably affects its performance. Even so, considering the little time available to port the game to the Switch, just the fact that it starts running can already be considered a victory.

The most important thing is that the code proved to be compatible with the Nintendo console, indicating that by refining its performance, it is possible to create an acceptable port for the Switch. Remembering that GTA 5 was initially released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, so it’s not that hard to believe that a port for the Nintendo video game was possible.

It’s worth remembering that perhaps this isn’t even close to Rockstar’s or Nintendo’s plans, which seem to be more committed to finishing the development of GTA 6 and, according to rumors, prepare the ground for the launch of a new console in the coming years.

Even so, it’s still impressive to see what a group of modders managed to do in just a few months with the source code in their hands. So far, there are no plans for this version, which would only run on unlocked consoles, to even reach the public.
