The blame lies with the Digital Markets Law (DMA) and a new EU decision that, yesterday, included the iPad OS on the list of gatekeepers, a group of companies that “determine future innovations or consumer choice and act as the so-called “guardians” between companies and Internet users».
Initially, only iOS was part of this list, but the European Commission also decided to classify the iPad’s operating system (which turns out to be a version of iOS) as a gatekeeper, after being the subject of a more in-depth analysis.
As happened with iOS, where Apple was forced to open the operating system to the installation of other app stores, iPad OS will also have to follow EU rules, with Epic Games being one of the first to benefit. The publisher will therefore be able to provide an application that gives access to Fortnite, as it had already announced for iOS.
Remember that the game was already in the Apple app store, but was removed by the apple brand, for not complying with the rules for paying commissions. Following this, Epic sued Apple for structural anti-competitive conduct, lost, but the court forced the brand to allow payments from other applications.
