The artificial intelligence company will pay the “Financial Times” newspaper to use reports in ChatGPT commands

The British newspaper Financial Times announced a partnership with OpenAI this Monday (April 29, 2024). The companies reached an agreement for articles from the vehicle to be used to train ChatGPT, an AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot.

In a joint statement with OpenAI, the Financial Times stated that the texts published by the vehicle will be cited, summarized or published to answer questions asked to ChatGPT. With the collaboration, the newspaper’s team will have unlimited access to the company’s AI services.

John Ridding, CEO of the Financial Times, said the agreement recognizes the value of the vehicle, but highlighted that the reports will not be prepared by AI. “The FT is committed to human journalism, produced by our incomparable newsroom, and this agreement will broaden the reach of that work, while deepening our understanding of readers’ demands and interests”he explained.

OpenAI’s director of operations, Brad Lightcap, stated that the collaboration will be valuable for training journalists with new technologies.

After receiving copyright lawsuits, OpenAI consolidated partnerships with newspapers around the world, such as the French Le Monde and the North American news agency Associated Press.

NYT sues OpenAI

Last year, the New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for copyright infringement. The action was filed in the Federal District Court in Manhattan (New York).

In the document, the North American newspaper states that the company used “millions of reports” published by the vehicle to train chatbots. It also claims to believe that it is among the largest sources of information for artificial intelligence technologies.
