A 25-year-old is being accused by his peers of embezzling almost BRL 500,000 in a coup against his republican colleagues, when he became treasurer, at the end of 2021.
Ygor Fernandes Araújo, 25, resident of Arpop Republic (Associação República Partenon de Ouro Preto), known locally as ‘Horrível’, was reported to the police for stealing R$ 514,683.71 from the household account.
The amount was raised over the last 15 years with the aim of buying a home for the republic. Students and former students, who have maintained a connection for over a decade, have always contributed to the house. Carnival parties and the sale of drinks also served to increase savings.
In 2022, they even signed a promise to purchase a 14-bedroom property for around R$390,000. Now the dream may have gone down the drain.
At the beginning of last month, the young man’s lawyers would have contacted the other residents to inform them that Ygor was having health problems and could not be communicated to. They claimed that he would have lost money on gambling and sports betting.
“Life there is very strict, we keep having meetings, recording everything in the minutes. But there was a relationship of trust and he knew what he was doing, he was not an amateur, ”said a resident to Uol, who declined to be identified.
