Bem Viver: ‘Many women are inspired by us’,

-

O Good Livingprogram of Brazil in fact, continues to celebrate women’s struggle month. This edition features an exclusive interview with Sonia Guajajara, minister of Indigenous Peoples, who talks about advancing the participation and representation of women occupying strategic positions within the federal government, National Congress and also in their organizations.

“Today we have a strong national articulation of indigenous women who have been working on strategies to strengthen women’s candidacies. But it is a reality that is growing among many peoples. I am here, from the Guajajara people, as minister; Joenia, from the Wapichana people, in presidency of Funai; Célia in Pará; Juliana Jenipapo in Ceará; Patrícia Pataxó in Bahia”, he states.

In February, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) decided that political parties are obliged to allocate a quota of financial resources and radio and TV time to indigenous candidates. The decision came after a consultation presented by deputy Célia Xakriabá (PSOL-MG) and whether it will work in the 2024 municipal elections is still under evaluation, but it already represents progress for indigenous candidacies.

“There is a diversity of people in which women are managing to overcome this barrier of machismo, this culture of machismo in which many people still adopt the non-participation of women as a culture. We have managed to overcome this barrier. Many women look at us, They tell us this: that they are inspired, that they are also motivated to follow this path, beyond the village. We consider that women are advancing, in general, throughout the world with an important role, and we indigenous women are also articulating to increasingly occupy other spaces”, points out Guajajara.

The minister also commented on the situation of demarcations of indigenous lands. She acknowledged that the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) has not yet defined which and how many indigenous lands will be demarcated in 2024. But she attributed the lack of concrete decisions to the National Congress which, in the minister’s words, “acts every day to prevent new demarcations, to prevent the disintrusions that we are carrying out”.
