Tony Perkins: NIT was not the goal but could be ‘fresh restart’

Hoping to generate some postseason momentum despite missing the NCAA Tournament, Iowa basketball begins its NIT journey Tuesday against Kansas State inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. ESPN will televise the 8 pm contest.
The Hawkeyes (18-14) earned a No. 3 seed after failing to pair a Big Ten Tournament run with their late push to end the regular season. Iowa will be hosting an NIT game for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
Kansas State, meanwhile, was lucky to hold on to an NIT bid after a tough late skid. The Wildcats (19-14) were 14-4 on Jan. 20, then dropped 10 of their next 15 games to remove all NCAA Tournament hopes. Tuesday’s winner will face the winner of No. 2 seed Utah and No. 7 UC Irvine on Saturday or Sunday, at a site to be determined.
