The People’s Procuratorate of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, requested death penalty against businesswoman Truong My Lan, accused of embezzling US$12.5 billion – equivalent to around R$62 billion. The Public Prosecutor’s request took place during the trial this Tuesday, 19th, according to information from CôngAnthe region’s police agency.

The tycoon is being accused of property embezzlement, bribery and violation of lending regulations in commercial activities of credit institutions. She was president of the Van Thinh Phat real estate company and was allegedly involved in a loan scheme from the Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), which is 90% controlled by her group. There are 85 accomplices also involved in the case.

Due to ‘civil liability’, the Prosecutor’s Office proposed that the defendant compensate the bank financially. Others accused of participating in the case may also have all of their winnings confiscated and used to compensate for the damages caused.

According to the newspaper Tuoi TreLan allegedly coordinated 368 fake loan applications to withdraw money from Saigon Commercial Bank for various purposes between 2012 and 2017. Then, from 2018 to 2022, she allegedly engaged in 916 fake loan applications at the same bank.

According to allegations by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant did not admit the crime and blamed her subordinates. She has been in prison since October 2022.
