Federal Police arrest three suspects responsible for Marielle’s murder

This Sunday (24), the Federal Police are carrying out Operation Murder Inc, which investigates the murders of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, as well as the attempted murder of advisor Fernanda Chaves. According to sources linked to the investigation, Domingos Brazão, current advisor to the Rio Court of Auditors, Chiquinho Brazão, federal deputy from Rio, and Rivaldo Barbosa, former head of the Civil Police of Rio, were arrested.

12 search and seizure warrants are also being executed, issued by the Federal Supreme Court, all in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The action has the participation of the Attorney General’s Office and the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro.

The State Secretariat of Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro and the National Secretariat of Penal Policies, of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, also support the operation. The action targets the intellectual authors of the executions. The crimes of criminal organization and obstruction of justice are also being investigated.

The report attempts to contact the defenses of the accused. Domingos Brazão said, in an interview with UOL in January this year, that he did not know and did not remember councilor Marielle Franco.

Chiquinho Brazão had released a statement on March 20, after the accusation of being the mastermind was leaked in the press. The note says that he was “surprised by the speculation” and stated that his relationship with Marielle was always “friendly and cordial”.

On social media, Marielle’s sister and minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, thanked the PF, federal government, Public Ministry and STF minister Alexandre de Moraes for their efforts. “We are closer to Justice”, considers Anielle. “Only God knows how much we dream of this day! Today is another big step towards getting the answers we have asked ourselves so much in recent years: who ordered Mari to be killed and why?”

Also on social media, the chief minister of the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Paulo Pimenta, highlighted that measures taken since the beginning of President Lula’s mandate were decisive in clarifying the murder of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes . “The Federal Government will continue to fulfill its role to combat these violent gangs that commit serious crimes against Brazilian families. Continuing investigations will certainly clarify several other crimes”, stated Pimenta.
