Rio – The sister of councilor Marielle Franco and Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco used her social media, this Sunday (24), to comment on the arrest of those suspected of being behind the murder of the parliamentarian and also of the driver Anderson Gomes, in 2018. Domingos Brazão, Chiquinho Brazão and former Civil Police chief Rivaldo Barbosa were targets of an operation by the Federal Police and Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ).

“This Palm Sunday (24), the day to celebrate our faith, the fight for justice, and in the liturgy the Sunday before Easter about new beginnings and resurrection, we woke up to the news of the joint operation of the Attorney General’s Office, Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal Police. Today is a historic day for Brazilian democracy and an important step in the search for justice in the case of Marielle and Anderson. It has been more than 6 years waiting for answers about who ordered Marielle to be killed and why?” , Anielle shared on her “X” account, the old Twitter.

Anielle also made it clear that the arrests made this Sunday do not mean that the case has been solved. According to the minister, it remains to be seen what the motivations for this brutal crime against the parliamentarian and Anderson were.

“It is important not to lose sight of the fact that so far no one has been effectively held responsible for this crime, among those named as executors and principals. All arrests are preventive and there is still a lot to be investigated and elucidated, especially regarding the clarification of the motivations behind a crime as cruel as this. But the coordinated efforts of the authorities are a spark of hope for us families”, said Anielle.

The minister also spoke about her sister’s fight in the City Council and how it all started, when the parliamentarian was elected with more than 46 thousand votes in the city. Anielle points out that her sister’s fight was for social justice, guaranteeing basic rights for the population, especially for those in favelas, outskirts, black people, women and informal workers.

“The resolution of the case is central to us, but not only. Today, we talk about the importance of this response for all of Brazil, for Marielle’s voters, for human rights defenders and for the most vulnerable population in this country”, he said.

Finally, Anielle reinforced that this is a painful moment for the family, which has been fighting for more than six years to solve the case. “On this day of pain and hope, our family continues to fight for justice. Nothing will bring our Mari back, but we are one step closer to the answers we so long for,” she concluded.
