The First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court decided this Monday (25), unanimously, to maintain the arrest of the three suspected of planning the murder of councilor Marielle Franco. The investigation now goes to the Attorney General’s Office, which will decide whether to file charges against Chiquinho and Domingos Brazão, and against the former head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, Rivaldo Barbosa.

The Supreme Court’s decision was communicated to the Chamber of Deputies as Chiquinho Brazão is a parliamentarian. The Constitution provides that, in the event of an arrest that is not caught in the act, the majority of deputies must approve the continuation of the measure. On the same day, his party, União Brasil, announced the expulsion of the deputy.
After the arrest of the suspects, Federal Police investigations will advance into an obstruction of justice scheme throughout the security area of Rio de Janeiro. The Rio Civil Police will also investigate the conduct of the former head of the corporation. It is suspected that Rivaldo received bribes from criminals during his administration.
