São Paulo — The deputy secretary of Development of the municipality of Nova Odessa, Eduardo Mota, died and the mayor Cláudio Schooder, known as Leitinho (PSD), was injured after the car they were in hit a horse on Rodovia dos Bandeirantes on Monday night – fair (26/3). Nova Odessa City Hall, in the interior of São Paulo, declared a three-day mourning period.
The accident happened around 9:15 pm at km 109, in the Hortolândia section. The two were returning from the capital to Nova Odessa.
According to initial information, there were around eight horses loose on the track. Eduardo Mota (in the featured photo on the right) was driving the official car and was unable to stop the vehicle after one of the animals crossed the road.
In a note to Metropolises, Nova Odessa City Hall reported that two cars and two trucks hit at least two of the horses, including the municipality’s Toyota Corolla. The secretary died at the scene.
Mayor out of danger
The mayor suffered abrasions and is admitted to the Sumaré State Hospital in stable condition. “He is undergoing examinations and medical evaluation and is being accompanied by his daughter, friends and advisors,” informed the city hall.
From the hospital, Leitinho ordered three days of official mourning. In a statement, he said he deeply regretted the death of his secretary and friend.
Eduardo Mota was, in addition to being deputy secretary, a businessman and communicator. He was 68 years old and leaves behind children and grandchildren, according to Nova Odessa City Hall.
Information about the funeral has not yet been released.
