An accident with horses loose on the track caused the death of the deputy secretary of Development of Nova Odessa, Eduardo Mota, on the night of this Monday, 26th, in Bandeirantes Highway. The city’s mayor, Cláudio Schooder, aka Leitinho (PSD), who was traveling with him, was injured and is hospitalized, but out of danger. At least four horses died in the accident that also involved a second car and two trucks. A Civil police determines who is responsible for the accident.

According to the state Highway Police, the accident happened around 9:15 pm, at km 109 of the highway, towards the interior, near Hortolândia. At that moment there were eight horses on the track, according to the corporation. The official car, a Toyota Corolla, which was driven by the assistant secretary, hit one of the horses.

The victims were returning from Guarulhos International Airport, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. Rescue teams were called, but Mota did not survive and died of cardiorespiratory arrest. The mayor was rescued and taken to the Sumaré State Hospital.

Nova Odessa city hall declared three days of official mourning. “It is with immense regret that we inform you of the loss of the businessman, family man and deputy secretary of Economic and Social Development of Nova Odessa, Eduardo Luís da Silva Mota, 68 years old, a great personal friend of the mayor of Nova Odessa, Cláudio Schooder”, said in a note.

This Tuesday, the 26th, still in the hospital, the mayor recorded a video talking about the accident and lamenting the loss of his friend and collaborator.

“My health is fine, thank God, there’s nothing, just five stitches here. The accident was terrible, ugly. Yesterday I lost a great friend, more than a friend, a brother,” he said.

He said that Mota picked him up at the airport and they made the trip back to Nova Odessa, talking in a relaxed way. “A horse, I don’t know where this horse came from, ended up taking my friend’s life.”

The mayor said that they had stopped for “a soup” dinner and resumed their journey when the accident occurred. “Someone probably left the gate open and the horses came out. It wasn’t just that one, there was another dead horse in front. And when I asked Mota for help, another horse ran by,” he said.

Eduardo Mota’s body began to lie in state at 1 pm, at the Municipal Palace of Nova Odessa. The burial was scheduled for 5 pm at the Municipal Cemetery.

In the official mourning decree, the deputy secretary is remembered for his contribution to the city’s development with business and social programs. “He leaves his contribution to political and social history and a legacy of love and companionship”, says the note.

The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP) informed in a note that the forensic investigation was called in and the case was registered as a homicide and being run over at the Hortolândia Police Station. The investigation of the case is in charge of the 2nd Police District of Hortolândia.

The CCR Autoban dealership reported that teams with inspection and pre-hospital care vehicles worked during the service and confirmed the death of one of the occupants of the car involved in the accident.

The concessionaire stated that it continuously monitors the lanes through the camera system and maintains awareness programs for residents neighboring the highways about animal care.

According to the company, our legislation provides that the responsibility for custody and incidents involving animals lies with the owner.
