Civil Police conclude investigation into elderly man’s murder; case was financially motivated

The Chapecó Criminal Investigations Division (DIC) concludes investigations into the death of a 76-year-old man, resident of Coronel Freitas, which occurred on 01/12/2024.

On this day, the victim’s vehicle was found abandoned, closed, in the interior of Chapecó and, on January 15, 2024, the victim’s corpse was found with punctures from a sharp instrument, in a pine plantation in the interior of Ponte Serrada /SC.

Initially, the family thought it was a crime of kidnapping and even filed a police report to that effect.

Later, as the investigations progressed, it was found to be a crime planned by the perpetrators more than a month ago, and motivated by financial interests. Three men were identified as having participated in the crime and charged with the crime of double homicide, due to a base motive and the use of resources that made the victim’s defense difficult/impossible.

It was clear that the motivation was financial, as one of the perpetrators had a debt of more than R$200,000.00 with the victim and saw Valdemar’s death as a solution to try to extinguish the debt. He was assisted in the criminal enterprise by one of his employees (general services at his farm), as well as a friend who was experiencing financial difficulties.

Everyone would have some financial advantage with the death of the elderly person. The debtor of the amount would “extinguish the debt and the other two would receive financial compensation from him.

As mentioned above, the crime had already been planned since the beginning of December 2023, however it was not put into practice before, as the victim traveled that month, returning to Coronel Freitas only at the end of December.

Days after returning, on 12/01, the group lured the victim to the interior of Ponte Serrada with the excuse of negotiating a property, a situation in which his life was taken.

During the investigations, the three identified perpetrators were arrested and await justice.

On this date, the Police Inquiry will be forwarded to the Judiciary.
