The Taiwanese Armed Forces carried out anti-aircraft exercises involving American-made Patriot air defense systems, the island’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday (26).
The exercise was carried out from 05:00 to 07:00 (from 18:00 to 20:00, the previous day in Brasília time), the ministry said in a statement. It is noteworthy that the Taiwanese Air Force will continue to increase the intensity of the exercises.
The statement cited alleged “incursions by Chinese Communist Party aircraft and ships into the sea and airspace around Taiwan.” and added that “the air force will continue to increase the intensity of the exercises” to respond to these alleged threats.
Previously, US President Joe Biden’s administration announced a historic proposal in the 2025 defense budget: the transfer of weapons from the United States’ arsenals to Taiwan for the first time.
Taiwan has been governed independently from mainland China since 1949. Beijing views the island as its province, while Taiwan claims it is an autonomous country but stops short of declaring independence. The 1992 Consensus refers to a meeting between delegations from Beijing and Taipei, during which they agreed on the one-China principle. Beijing opposes any official contacts by foreign states with Taipei and considers Chinese sovereignty over the island to be indisputable.
