Holy Week in Braga is experiencing one of its high points today with the holding of the Biblical Procession ‘Vós Sereis o Meu Povo’, popularly known as the Procession of Nossa Senhora da Burrinha and which mobilizes hundreds of participants.
The procession, which portrays history from the Old to the New Testament, starts at 9:30 pm, starting at the S. Victor Church square.
Organized since 1998 by the Parish and Parish Council of São Victor, this expressive procession traditionally has more than 800 extras who help tell the prehistory of the paschal mystery of Jesus that the Church celebrates in the following days.
This procession, which attracts thousands of people to the city center, is described as a true catechesis lesson, which begins with the call of Abraham, passing through the era of the Patriarchs, slavery in Egypt and the liberating action of Moses, until the childhood of Jesus, including his escape with Joseph and Mary to Egypt, in which they follow the Lady and Child riding a donkey.
This procession appears as an evocation of the Procession of Nossa Senhora das Angústias that marked the daily life of São Victor since the second half of the century. XVIII and which included the image of Our Lady riding on a donkey, which made it one of the most popular in Braga. In the beginning, the procession took place in July, but in 1960 it was integrated into the city’s Holy Week, running until 1973. The procession was resumed in 1998, leaving aside the devotional of the Sorrows of Mary and began to focus on the narrative of the history of salvation, from Abraham to Jesus Christ.
