Study is by the company Paraná Pesquisas; former president is out of the race because his electoral rights were revoked by the TSE and he is also at risk of being arrested

In a dispute in the presidential elections today (the next election will be in 2026), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) would have 41.6% of voting intentions, while former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) would have 41.7 % of votes. The numbers are from a survey by Paraná Pesquisa commissioned by the Progressive Party (PP). The 2 would be technically tied, within the margin of error of 2.2 pp (percentage points).

In 2022, the PT member beat Bolsonaro in the 2nd round of the elections with 50.9% of the votes (60,345,999 votes). The former president, who is currently prevented from running, had 49.10% (58,206,354 votes). The TSE (Superior Electoral Court) decided, by 5 votes to 2, to determine the ineligibility of the former Brazilian Chief Executive for 8 years for abuse of political power and misuse of the media.

Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, who now heads PL Mulher, is the candidate who has the best chance in a dispute against Lula in a direct confrontation, the survey showed. She has 43.4% of voting intentions, against 44.5% for the PT member.

The research company also tested the names of the governors of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans); Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (New); Paraná, Ratinho Junior (PSD); and Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), in addition to senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) and the president of the PP, senator Ciro Nogueira (PI).

The survey was carried out from March 18 to 22, 2024. It interviewed 2,024 voters from 162 cities in the 27 UFs (federative units). The survey’s margin of error is 2.2 pp and the confidence level is 95%. Read the full text (PDF – 633 kB). To see the results for all tested scenarios, read this blog post Power360.
