In the year that marks 100 years since the death of Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva, journalist, staunch associationist and republican, the Municipality of Gouveia has prepared a set of initiatives that mark this date and will take place on April 4th.

The program begins at 3 pm, at the Cemitério Velho de Gouveia, with the unveiling of a tribute plaque at the grave of Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva.

This will be followed by the unveiling of the plaque with his name at 4pm, at Largo do Castelo, in Gouveia and at the end of the afternoon, from 5pm onwards, the auditorium of the Vergílio Ferreira Municipal Library will host an evocative session about life and work by Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva, with intervention by José Mota, ending the program with the lecture “Past, present and future of Mutualist Associations”, by speaker Idália Salvador Serrão.

It should be noted that Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva was the owner of the “Venetian Balloons” factory, a 20th century reference for the republican work carried out in the then town, now the city of Gouveia; He founded the Association of Mutual Aid of Artists and Workers of Gouveia in 1896 and was also a partner of Pedro Botto Machado in a silk thread fabric factory.
