Agents from the Newark (New Jersey) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) unit arrested on March 19 a Brazilian national who is wanted in Brazil to serve a sentence of 17 years and 4 months in prison for murder intentional and attempted murder.

“This was an operation that required great care and planning on the part of our team as it involved a convicted murderer,” said ERO Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris. “They carried out the mission with extreme precision and professionalism. I would also like to thank the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Newark for their assistance,” he highlighted.

According to the information, the Brazilian, whose name was not disclosed, was convicted on August 2, 2010 for the aforementioned crimes. He was sentenced to 17 years and 4 months in prison.

The Brazilian illegally entered the United States on an unknown date, in an unknown location, and without being inspected, admitted or released by a US immigration officer.

Brazilian authorities provided ERO in Newark with an official copy of the sentencing and conviction document, confirming his convictions.

He will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

ICE agents make enforcement decisions on a case-by-case basis in a professional and responsible manner. ERO conducts deportations of individuals without a legal basis to remain in the United States, including on the orders of immigration judges from DOJ’s Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR), a separate entity from DHS and ICE.

As one of ICE’s three operational directorates, the ERROR unit is the primary federal law enforcement authority responsible for domestic immigration enforcement. Its mission is to protect the homeland by arresting and removing those who undermine the safety of U.S. communities and the integrity of immigration laws.

The ERO workforce is comprised of more than 7,700 law enforcement and support personnel in 25 field offices and 208 locations nationwide, 30 overseas postings.
