CAOA Chery has invested heavily in the Brazilian market, seeking to place its SUVs among the best-selling here.

But what happens when we put the Tiggo 5x and Tiggo 7 models face to face?

Even though they belong to different segments due to their size, both can target the same consumer if they are willing to spend more than R$130,000.

Is it worth investing in the most complete compact or looking for the entry-level mid-range?

Both have very attractive prices

The prices of the Tiggo 5x 2025 are obviously lower than the prices charged by its bigger brother, as Chery clearly defines the space that each SUV has in its line (remembering that it still sells the larger Tiggo 8).

The entry-level model starts at almost R$115,000 in the Tiggo 5x Sport version, giving considerable price jumps in the more expensive versions. The intermediate Tiggo 5x Pro requires an investment of R$15,000, while the top-of-the-line Tiggo 5x Pro Hybrid requires an additional R$15,000.

The first two use the 1.5 turbo engine with 150 hp and 21.4 kgfm, with a nine-speed CVT transmission, while the hybrid version adds the electric motor to deliver 160 hp and 25.5 kgfm, with the same gearbox.

The starting price of the Tiggo 7 2025 is above what is asked for the intermediate option of its smaller brother, showing that here you can expect a more spacious, equipped SUV with superior performance.

In fact, the entry-level version Tiggo 7 Sport arrived recently and caused a big stir in the market with its starting price of R$135,000, far below competitors with similar size.

The VW Taos, for example, has already dropped in price.

Above this option appear the Tiggo 7 Pro Max Drive and the Tiggo 7 Pro Hybrid, both costing almost R$170,000. Like several other Chery models, they received a reduction in the 2025 line.

The entry-level model uses the same 1.5 turbo engine with 150 hp and 21.4 kgfm as the Tiggo 5x, while the intermediate version has the 1.6 turbo engine with 187 hp and 28 kgfm.

The first has a 9-speed CVT transmission, while the second is automated with 7 speeds.

Finally, the hybrid SUV also adds an electric motor to the 1.5 turbo engine, generating 160 hp and 25.5 kgfm, and also using the 9-speed CVT transmission.

Lots of standard equipment

Chery usually uses different equipment in more than one model, and here history repeats itself. If we put the Tiggo 5x Pro (R$ 129,990) and the Tiggo 7 Sport (R$ 134,990) head to head, which one is more equipped?

Both are well equipped, with six airbags, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, reversing camera, leather seats, 10.25″ multimedia, twilight sensor, cruise control, A/C with rear outlet, electronic parking brake with Auto Hold and 18-inch wheels.

The Tiggo 5x Pro is the only one with dual zone A/C, 360º camera and panoramic roof, while the Tiggo 7 Sport offers a passenger seat with electrical adjustments, induction charger, larger digital panel (12.3″ versus 7″), electrochromic rear-view mirror, rain sensor, full LED headlights and four-wheel disc brakes.

In other words, even though it is a cheaper version to move the market, the Tiggo 7 Sport is a step above its brother. The price difference between them, currently R$5,000, seems to compensate in favor of the larger SUV.

The situation is reversed if you want the Tiggo 5x Hybrid, which gets high beam assistant, blind spot alerts, lane change, frontal collision and rear cross traffic, ACC, rain sensor, start/stop and induction charger.

In this case, you pay R$10,000 more compared to the Tiggo 7 Sport and have a more equipped car, with the exception of the photochromic rear-view mirror, electrically adjustable passenger seat and hood supported by a gas spring.

WINNER: A tie.

The difference between the 1.5 Turbo and the 1.6 Turbo

The Tiggo 5x engine line is basically made up of the same 1.5 turbo option with 150 hp and 21.4 kgfm. The only exception is the addition of the electric powertrain in the hybrid version, which increases the numbers to 160 hp and 25.5 kgfm. They all use the same nine-speed CVT transmission.

And what about performance? In the combustion versions, Chery’s SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds and has a maximum speed of 193 km/h, while the hybrid version does the same in 9.2 seconds, reaching the same final speed.

Jumping to the Tiggo 7, we have more options. The range of engines starts with the same 1.5 turbo mentioned above, taking the SUV to 100 km/h in 10.7 seconds and reaching a maximum of 180 km/h, the same in all versions.

The Tiggo 7 Pro is the most powerful, with a 1.6 turbo gasoline engine with 187 hp and 28 kgfm (with 7-speed automated transmission), reaching 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds. The hybrid version has the same package as the Tiggo 5x Hybrid, with 0 to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds.

Regarding consumption, we see that the Tiggo 5x does not have good news for its buyers, being the worst in almost all measurements. It is second only to its own hybrid version on the road when fueled with gasoline.

At the other end, the Tiggo 7 Hybrid has the best numbers in the city and on the highway with ethanol, losing to its conventional versions on the highway with gasoline.

A curious detail is in relation to the Tiggo 7 Pro, with a 1.6 turbo engine and powered only by gasoline: it is, at the same time, the worst in the city and the best on the road.

The Tiggo 7 is much more spacious

You can already imagine who won in terms of internal space. The Tiggo 7 measures 4.50 m long, 1.84 m wide, 1.70 m high and has a wheelbase of 2.67 m, measurements worthy of a medium SUV.

Meanwhile, its compact brother is 4.33 m long, 1.83 m wide, 1.64 m high and has a wheelbase of 2.63 m.

What directly affects the space are the 17 cm difference in length and 4 cm in the wheelbase.

But it’s worth noting that we’re talking about SUVs from different segments, as the Tiggo 5x has good space compared to other compacts. In addition, it offers A/C outlet for the second row, armrest and lower central tunnel.

The Tiggo 7 has the same amenities for rear passengers and has more space than the Compass, for example.

But the big difference is the size of its trunk, which holds 525 liters in the Sport version and 475 liters in the other configurations.

Chery even placed a lower level in the trunk, where you can accommodate smaller objects that you don’t want to see rolling around in the trunk. And the compartment lid can still have its automatic opening adjusted.

Which is cheaper in maintenance?

All Chery cars are sold with a 5-year warranty and inspections in the most common standard here, with stops every 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first.

Unfortunately, the brand only discloses values ​​up to the 5th revision.

In the case of the Tiggo 5x, all versions have the same cost up to 50,000 km, which is R$4,600. The 40,000 km limit rose significantly after the new model was presented, now reaching R$1,700.

The Tiggo 7 separates the values ​​depending on the engine. The Sport and Hybrid versions, which use the 1.5 turbo engine, have an almost identical value to the Tiggo 5x, being just R$0.11 more expensive.

The Pro version, with a turbocharged 1.6 engine, costs R$ 4,200.

Timid sales for the Tiggo 7

In 2023, the Tiggo 5x was Chery’s best-selling model in our market. There were 14,400 units, ranking 16th among all SUVs with just 1.84% share. Despite the brand’s best-selling title, these are still very discreet numbers.

The Tiggo 7 was in 20th position with 6,349 units registered (0.81% share), behind the Tiggo 8, which is more expensive and had 9,545 registrations.

Looking at the numbers until February 2024, the story remains the same. The Tiggo 5x is the best-selling, with 3,970 units to date (12th), while the Tiggo 7 has sold 1,109 units (20th), one position behind the Tiggo 8.

The brand’s hope lies in the new Tiggo 7 Sport, which should considerably increase the model’s sales with its starting price of R$134,990.

Conclusion

The competition between Chery’s SUVs was relatively balanced, but the Tiggo 7 got the best.

It won the engine dispute, being superior in performance with the 1.6 turbo engine and equally economical to its smaller brother with its hybrid version.

Furthermore, it is much more spacious as it belongs to the midsize segment, has a much larger trunk (and with automatic opening in some versions) and also has cheaper revisions.

Meanwhile, the Tiggo 5x is a cheaper model and has had a much better sales performance, precisely because of its more attractive prices.

The only tie in this comparison came in the equipment list.
