A minibus ran over participants in a procession, this Sunday (31/3), in Marcos Freire, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife. Videos circulating on social media show people lying on the ground. So far, five deaths and 20 injuries are suspected.

According to initial information from witnesses, the vehicle had lost control. The Fire Department and the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) are on site. In a note, Samu confirmed the sending of 10 ambulances.

A report from Samu reported that seven people were treated by ambulances. A man, aged 67, and two women, aged 53 and 50, were taken to Hospital da Restauração alive. Two men, aged 75 and 51, died while receiving care in the mobile units. Two other people died at the scene, and their information was not revealed.

Governor Raquel Lyra, in a statement on the social network X (formerly Twitter), lamented the deaths. “Sad to hear the news this Easter Sunday,” she wrote.

In a note, Samu Metropolitano do Recife reported that it was called at 4:57 pm to Avenida Barreto de Menezes. Ten ambulances from Samu from the municipalities of Recife, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Moreno, in addition to vehicles from the Fire Department, were used in the ongoing incident.

According to Jaboatão dos Guararapes City Hall, the bus driver fled the scene after the incident, but was identified. The IML and IC are on site, as well as the Military Police, Municipal Guard, Civil Defense and Social Assistance of the municipality to identify the injured and the victims’ families.
