Bloomberg Línea — O Ibovespa (IBOV) retreats this Monday (1), the first trading session of April, with investors reflecting inflation data in the United States, released on Friday (29), when markets were closed for the Easter holiday.

The personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE), the US central bank’s preferred metric for measuring so-called underlying inflation, “cooled off” last month. The index advanced 0.3%, after rising 0.4% in January.

The core PCE, which excludes the most volatile components of food and energy prices, rose 0.3% in February compared to the previous month, in line with expectations.

In a speech on Friday following the release of the PCE, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell repeated that the US central bank is patient on monetary policy.

“We don’t need to be in a hurry to cut [as taxas de juros],” he said at a Fed event.

At around 11 am (Brasília time), the Ibovespa fell 0.26%, trading at 127,777 points. The dollar, in turn, rose 0.60%, to R$5.04. The session was a fall for Petrobras shares (PETR3; PETR4), as well as retailers and banks.

Abroad, Wall Street indices rose up to 0.6%, such as the Nasdaq, with great exposure to the technology sector. In Europe, markets remain closed due to the holiday.

On the week’s agenda, US private sector employment data for March will be published on Wednesday (3), and the official labor market report, the payroll, on Friday (5).

Among commodities, iron ore closed close to stability in Singapore after sinking to the lowest price in 10 months this Monday (1st), with a recovery driven by strong industrial data in China.

Also noteworthy is gold, which once again reached new records following signs that the Fed will cut interest rates this year.
