In an interview with the website Collider, the director was asked about the project, which was announced shortly after the premiere of Godzilla vs Kong, but has remained silent until now. Wingard revealed that not only is the project alive, he recently spoke with screenwriter Simon Barrett (You’re next), which is preparing a new version of the adaptation’s story.

A more serious tone, but still for the whole family

Wingard, who has worked on horror films such as V/H/S/2 It is Blair Witchrevealed that he was very inspired by visuals from 80s cartoons, such as Thundercatsin the creation of action scenes Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire.

Asked about what the tone of the adaptation will be, the director believes that it will take the plot from Thundercats quite seriously, but will still try to deliver an adventure for the whole family. According to the filmmaker, the original cartoon had very strong moments for children, such as Lion-O being attacked inside the temple in the first episode, bringing a sense of danger to the story — and that is what the film will want to rescue.

“I think any good adaptation these days needs to be faithful to the source material. That’s what people want and that’s our goal,” commented Wingard. It is worth remembering that the director is responsible for the somewhat mistaken adaptation of Death Noteso here’s hoping he learned from the experience.

It will not be a live action film

In 2021, when the project to adapt Thundercats was announced, Adam Wingard revealed that the idea is to create an animated feature, using computer graphics to create a realistic look for the characters. This ends all the glorious montages made over the years of actors who could play the characters in the cartoon.

At the time, the director revealed exactly why he chose to follow the path of CGI animation instead of live action:

“I want to make a film about Thundercats that looks like a cartoon from the 80s. I don’t want to reinvent their look or do something live action. I don’t want it to look like cats. I want to make a CGI film with a hyper-realistic look, which can serve as a bridge between the original design and computer graphics.”

When asked about the possibility of Thundercats be the film following the success Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire, the director just replied that it could be. It remains to be seen how long all these ideas will actually come to fruition.
