O SU7 received almost 90,000 orders in just 24 hours. The price of the standard model is 215,900 yuan (27,667 euros), while the Pro and Max versions will cost 245,900 yuan (31,670 euros) and 299,900 yuan (38,432 euros), respectively.
“It’s 30,000 yuan (3,851 euros) cheaper than the Model 3,” company founder Lei Jun said at the presentation on Thursday, referring to the vehicle from US-based Tesla, whose price Retail sales in China starts at 245,900 yuan (31,670 euros).
Strong demand increased the waiting time for vehicle delivery to between four and seven months.
The executive director of the company, which invested 10 billion dollars (9.3 billion euros) in the automobile business, called the project “the last great business adventure” of his life.
Chris Bangle, vehicle consultant and ‘designer’ of the brand’s future cars, stated at the presentation that the SU7 is an “example of the Chinese electrical industry”.
The company expects to sell between 55,000 and 100,000 units of the SU7 this year.
The eventual success in the electric vehicle market of Xiaomi, until now mainly known for its cell phones, could have an impact on national rivals, such as XPeng and BYD, which could be forced to adjust their prices to remain competitive.
The SU7 will go on sale in 211 stores in 39 Chinese cities within a month, from purchase to delivery of the vehicle, Lei said.
Xiaomi, which has not yet announced plans to sell the vehicle abroad, plans to launch more electric vehicle models in the future, with the aim of becoming one of the top five electric car manufacturers in the world within 15 to 20 years.
