sAccording to SITE Sul — Union of Workers of Manufacturing Industries, Energy and Environmental Activities of the South, the death of two workers “due to an alleged fall from scaffolding is a very serious accident and reveals a gross safety failure”.

“The death of any worker in their workplace is a nameless tragedy and cannot under any circumstances go unnoticed,” said the union in a statement, which “demands that all responsibilities and consequences be investigated and removed” from the “serious accident, from which Repsol will not be able to escape”.

For SITE Sul, “there is no point in claiming that these are workers employed by a service provider, as one will certainly come to the conclusion that they are workers hired by a temporary employment company and transferred to a provider of services”, in turn “hired by Repsol”.

“This is the usual chain of precariousness and exploitation of thousands of workers in the Sines Industrial Complex, where low wages exist”, the note reads.

Two men died on Monday in a work accident at the Repsol Polímeros factory, in Sines, when they fell from “a height of more than 30 meters”, revealed a source from the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT).

According to the same source, the two workers “were dismantling a structure and fell from a height of more than 30 meters”.

In the note released today, SITE Sul also announced that it will “request explanations from Repsol about the accident” and makes available to the families of the workers who died “all availability to help them in resolving the entire legal process”.

A source from the Alentejo Litoral Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command indicated that firefighters were given an alert at 4:29 pm about a fall of temporary or mobile structures.

Meanwhile, Repsol Polímeros has already announced the opening of an investigation to investigate the causes of the accident that killed the two workers at the Sines Industrial Complex, in the district of Setúbal.

In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, the company lamented the death of the two workers aged 21 and 37, of Brazilian nationality, and explained that they both belonged to a service provider company.

According to Repsol, “the accident occurred during the dismantling of scaffolding” at the factory complex, in Sines, at 4:00 pm.

“Repsol has opened an investigation to find the causes of the accident”, said the company, adding that it is “in permanent contact with the service provider company to offer all its support”.
