A The information was confirmed by the Cypriot President, Nikos Christodoulidis, during a press conference with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, at the search and rescue coordination center in the port of Larcana, according to a statement from the presidency.

“Tragic events must not discourage us. We must redouble our efforts to provide more assistance as needs increase dramatically,” said the Cypriot leader, adding that “what has been achieved so far must not be forgotten.”

Christodoulidis also indicated that Cyprus will be in a position to send more humanitarian assistance before the end of the month.

“I express our sincere condolences to the WCK and the countries that lost their citizens, and we call for an immediate and thorough investigation of this incident,” he added.

For his part, Metsola stressed that the humanitarian corridor led by Cyprus “is the exact translation” of European values, such as solidarity or peace: “United in the defense of our common humanity”, he stated.

Shortly before, Nicosia Government spokesman Konstantinos Letzmbiotis reiterated that the attack does not affect the humanitarian initiative, although “all security conditions must be taken into account” on the ground, according to a statement from the presidency.

WCK explained that one of its vehicles was attacked on Monday night by the Israeli Army as it passed through Deir-al Bala, in the center of the Gaza Strip, after leaving a warehouse where it had unloaded one hundred tons of food, in a movement coordinated with the Israeli authorities.

Images recently published on social media show that one of the WCK organization’s vehicles has damage to the roof, which suggests that it may have been hit by an air strike.

The founder of WCK, chef José Andrés, deplored the attack and argued that Israel “must stop this indiscriminate killing”.

The attack against humanitarian workers has already been condemned by the European Union and several European countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain and Belgium, which demanded explanations from Israel for the death of seven humanitarian workers.

Since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, WCK has participated in relief efforts, providing meals to residents of the Gaza Strip.

WCK, based in the capital of the United States, was founded by José Andrés during the serious humanitarian crisis that affected Haiti after the violent earthquake recorded in 2010.
