Strong earthquake is felt in Taiwan, and authorities issue tsunami warning for Japan and the Philippines

A strong earthquake was felt in Taiwan, on Tuesday night (2) — Wednesday morning (3), local time. Authorities issued tsunami warnings for Japan and the Philippines.

Taiwanese TV stations said some buildings collapsed and landslides were reported after the quake. Part of the capital Taipei was also left without power.

A second tremor of magnitude 6.6 was recorded 13 minutes after the 7.5 earthquake, according to Japanese authorities.

Waves of up to three meters could hit the Japanese island of Okinawa, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK. Residents living in the region were ordered to evacuate.

NHK also said that waves of 30 centimeters were recorded on the Japanese island of Yonaguni, which is about 100 km off the east coast of Taiwan.

The Philippine government also asked residents of coastal areas to leave their homes.

The earthquake was also felt in coastal Chinese cities, including Shanghai.
