50 Protest Songs from April 25th to Today: #29 ‘Todagente’, Da Weasel (1997)

-

Until April 25, 2024, BLITZ publishes a list of 50 songs published after the Carnation Revolution, in the atmosphere of freedom that resulted from it. Of political, social or environmental intervention, with a sharp word and refined aim, of mere observation, criticism or strong protest, from punk to hip-hop, from rock to Portuguese popular music. The texts are signed by Rui Miguel Abreu, a long-time BLITZ collaborator. Every day, this list will receive a new song.

29. ‘Todagente’, by Da Weasel (1997)

In 1997, two years after giving it strength and soul in a surprising debut album, Da Weasel looked at the reality that surrounded them and reported what they saw without filters and with fine irony, capturing in the process the attention of a uprooted generation, in search of a place, capable of absorbing the rap cadences of Pacman (today Carlão) and accepting with the same eagerness the rock muscle that the band also did not reject. This clearly pointed out the path to success that would take them to the top. And to achieve this, the extreme identification of his followers with the truths contained in the rhymes that balanced biting satire, denunciation, some fantasy and an imagination in the use of Portuguese that we were not yet fully accustomed to were important. In the song ‘Todagente’ there is even a certain dose of premonition, and even though cell phones have become commonplace, this song could well have been released yesterday since it seems that there are certain things that are hard to change: “Everyone criticizes their neighbor’s cell phone/ But deep down everyone wants to have one just like it/ Everyone shouts: everyone is different, everyone is the same!/ But maybe there are a few more guys/ Everyone wants to be supportive/ But in moment of truth everyone disappears from the area/ Everyone wants to be very modern/ But this narrow-mindedness will be eternal/ Everyone wants to do something original/ Ending up copying what they think is original”.
