Fans of “The Good Doctor” were surprised by the death of an important character, with the airing of the most recent episode of the series in the United States. The episode, which aired on Tuesday night (2/4) on the American network ABC, showed Dr. Asher Wolfe, played by Noah Galvin, being murdered in a violent attack motivated by anti-Semitism and homophobia.

The attack on Dr. Asher Wolfe

The doctor, who has been part of the series since season 4, was attacked when he returned home after working at the hospital. He stopped the car when he found a group of vandals destroying a synagogue. Trying to stop them, Asher said he wouldn’t call the police if they stopped what they were doing. When one of the vandals speculated that he was Jewish, the doctor responded, “Yes I am, and I’m also gay. I’m calling the police right now.”

When Dr. Wolfe turned his back on the scene, one of the criminals hit him in the head with a gun, then fled and left him dead in the street. The scene was juxtaposed with the character’s boyfriend, Jerome, played by Giacomo Baessato, waiting for him at a restaurant, where he planned to propose.

Episode message

The episode ends with a message: “If you or someone you know has experienced anti-Semitism, homophobia or any type of hate crime, or if you want to learn more about how you can help, visit splcenter.org.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is an organization that serves as a catalyst for racial justice in the American South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance human rights.

End of series

“The Good Doctor” will end with its 7th season, which is currently airing in the United States. Developed by “House” creator David Shore, the series stars Freddie Highmore (“Bates Motel”) as the brilliant autistic doctor Shaun Murphy.

Along with Richard Schiff, who plays Shaun’s mentor Dr. Grassman, Highmore starred in the series for all seven seasons, while the other cast members alternated. The actor’s character has autism and Savant syndrome, which has as one of its characteristics difficulty in socializing, a great capacity for memorization and above-average intelligence. The episodes explore their difficulties in some aspects of care and their exceptional qualities in treating patients.

The last episodes began airing on February 20th in the USA and the final chapter is scheduled for May 14th. In Brazil, the series is available on the Sony pay channel and the Globoplay platform.
