Today, April 3rd, the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of April 25th, 1974 officially began in Santarém with a tribute to Captain Salgueiro Maia on the date that marks the 32nd anniversary of his death.

“Salgueiro Maia took nothing with him, but he left us everything: freedom, democracy, respect for the world and our fellow man”, said Captain Joaquim Correia Bernardo at the evocative ceremony that took place next to the statue of Salgueiro Maia in the Jardim of Carnations.

The program for this year’s celebrations of the 25th of April at Santarém Chamber aims not only to celebrate 50 years of democracy, but also the memory and deeds of ‘Capitão Sem Medo’.

One of the highlights of this vast program will be the recreation of the route taken by the Salgueiro Maia military column, in the early hours of the 24th to 25th of April.

On the 27th, the return of the military column will be recreated, at 11 am, in Largo do Município.

The community show “This is the dawn I was waiting for”, staged based on a text by Joaquim Correia Bernardo, is also scheduled to take place.

The show reconstructs “what happened at the Santarém Cavalry Practice School before the departure of the column of vehicles that took the Capitães de Abril to Lisbon.”

Another of the highlights of the program will be the responsibility of the group Sérgio Godinho & Os Assessores, which will present the show “Liberdade25” live, on April 13th, at 9:30 pm, at EPC.
