In 2021, civil engineer Giuliano Conte’s American Bully dog died during a Latam flight, which caused the company to suspend the transport of animals at that time. Latam had informed in a note that “it was observed that he [o cachorro] gnawed the kennel [caixa de transporte] of wood he was on and asphyxiated”, even though he was “in compliance with the company’s process for transporting large animals”.
In the same year, a golden retriever puppy named Zyon did not survive after a flight between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In a statement at the time, the company said it was aware of what had happened and would do “everything in its power to offer the necessary assistance at this time”.
The animal shelter where Zyon was born committed to giving a new dog to the family, who had been preparing for months to have a dog.
In 2019, a dog died on a flight between São Paulo and Espírito Santo. The animal, nicknamed Tom, was traveling in the hold of the plane, and arrived dead at its destination, according to its owner. The company responsible for transport, Gol, was ordered in the second instance at the São Paulo Court of Justice to pay compensation for moral damages in the amount of R$3,000.
Another case, this time, had a less sad, but no less harrowing, ending. A dog, named Pandora, disappeared during a Gol flight connection at Guarulhos airport (SP), and was missing for around 45 days until she was only found in January 2022.
Influencer even chartered a jet
Swedish YouTuber Felix Kjellberg, known as PewDiePie, chartered a jet to take his dog, Edgar, with him when he moved to Japan in 2022. He reported that the airlines did not accept transporting the dog in the passenger cabin because it weighed more than 10 kg.
