Dog dies during airline transport

The Ministry of Justice notified Gol so that the airline could provide clarification following the death of dog Joca during transport. The company got the dog’s destination wrong — Mato Grosso — and sent it to Fortaleza, Ceará.

The notification came from the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), a body that is part of the Ministry of Justice. The secretary, Wadih Damus, stated that the situation cannot go unanswered.

“A situation like this requires investigation in detail and cannot go unnoticed. We cannot accept that situations like these continue to happen,” she said.

The secretariat wants to know what method the company uses to transport animals and what the transport policy is, in addition to what the reparation action will be for the owners of the dog Joca after the death of the animal.

Joca, a five-year-old golden retriever dog, died during air transport by Gollog, a Gol company, after an error at the destination, on Monday (22).

The dog should have been taken from São Paulo to Mato Grosso, but was put on the wrong plane and taken to Ceará. Due to the error, he was sent back to Guarulhos International Airport, but arrived dead.

After disembarking in Mato Grosso, Joca’s owner, João Fantazzini, learned that the animal had been taken to the wrong destination. Fantazzini returned to São Paulo to welcome Joca.

According to the golden retriever’s owner, the veterinarian had given a certificate indicating that the animal would survive a two and a half hour trip, but with the error, Joca spent almost 8 hours on the plane.

The family says that Joca did not receive the necessary care from the company. The airline states that it accompanied the animal throughout the journey and that the death was unexpected, in São Paulo, after it returned.
