The situation of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), escalated internationally after the call for the Rumble platform by the United States Congress. The investigation aims to understand the extent of the censorship orders allegedly issued by Moraes during the 2022 Brazilian elections, especially in relation to the suppression of conservative content on social platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Elon Musk, owner of X, has been a vocal critic of Moraes, going so far as to classify him as a “dictator” and accusing him of direct interference in the elections. Musk went further by providing the US Republican Party Judiciary Committee with evidence of orders to take down profiles and content associated with conservative figures, including former president Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters.

In a report released on April 17, the Committee described Moraes’ actions as an effort at censorship, highlighting Bolsonaro’s penalization for “practicing irregular propaganda” and the suppression of voices such as those of journalists Guilherme Fiúza, Rodrigo Constantino and Flávio Gordon , as well as politicians Marcos do Val and Carla Zambelli.

The US State Department was criticized in the document for its inaction in the face of censorship efforts undertaken by the Brazilian judiciary. The Congressional subcommittee, which also investigates other platforms like Rumble, wants to expand the scope to understand whether such practices are recurrent and constitute a violation of democratic principles.

This international escalation places not only Minister Alexandre de Moraes, but the Brazilian judicial system itself under a global microscope, questioning the integrity of the electoral process and freedom of expression in the country. Brazil’s response to these accusations could affect bilateral relations with the United States.
