Following the case of the dog that died during air transport this week, the Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine (CFMV) is publicly warning the competent authorities about the urgent need to regulate the air and road transport of animals.

According to the council, this is an issue of extreme importance for the well-being and safety of animals, passengers and professionals in civil aviation and land transport.

The transport of animals, whether domestic or wild, requires specific care to ensure that they are carried out in a safe and responsible manner, respecting their physiological and behavioral needs. The CFMV emphasizes that the lack of adequate regulation can pose risks to the health and well-being of both animals and people involved in transport.

The CFMV states that it recognizes the complexity of the issue and is committed to contributing to the development of regulations that ensure high standards of safety, health and animal welfare. To this end, the Council is available to collaborate with the competent authorities, offering its expertise and technical-scientific knowledge in the area of Veterinary Medicine.

The Council highlights the importance of collaboration with other institutions such as the Ministries of Ports and Airports, Agriculture and Livestock, Environment and Climate Change, and Health, in addition to the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Federal Police, to comprehensively address the health, animal welfare and safety aspects related to the air transport of animals.

For the CFMV, it is essential that there be clear and comprehensive regulations that consider the particularities of each animal species and breed, the risks involved and the necessary preventive measures, such as the participation of veterinarians in the transport process.

The CFMV concludes its statement by reiterating its commitment to promoting animal welfare and the multispecies family and highlighting that it awaits effective actions from the authorities to guarantee safe and responsible air and road transport for everyone involved.
