The Formula 1 Commission meets to discuss a possible change in the category’s scoring system. The proposal on the agenda aims to reward a greater number of teams with points, covering the top 12 on the grid instead of the current top ten.

This idea arose due to the great disparity between the teams. Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin dominate the field, making it difficult for smaller teams to score points. In China, for example, only Haas, through Nico Hulkenberg, managed to pinch a point, as only Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, among the top five, did not complete the race.

In the first five races this year, the teams at the bottom of the grid accumulated just 12 points: 7 for RB and 5 for Haas. Williams, Alpine and Sauber have yet to score. With the proposed new format, Haas would have 17 points, RB 10, Williams 5 and Alpine and Sauber 2 points each.

The F1 Commission is made up of representatives from the category, holders of commercial rights, the FIA and the ten teams. Any approved changes will need to be ratified by the World Motorsport Council (WMSC) to take effect from the 2025 season.
