A retired war correspondent who drowns her sorrows in gin-based drinks finds herself in the company of her teenage grandson as a “caregiver”. A drama permeated by generational paradigms, which has everything to result in a conflictual relationship, leads to an unexpected friendship that is good for both parties. This is the plot of A Matriarca, a New Zealand film that is showing between April 29th and 30th and on the holiday, May 1st, at Cine Teatro Ouro Verde, with two daily screenings, at 4pm and 7:30pm.

Grandmother, Ruth, carries on her face the weight of someone who was once in a front of war. Now, many years later and with a fractured leg, she rests at her son’s house and finds refuge in drinking to deal with a past that is still poignant in her memory but that does not follow her routine of seclusion. The grandson, Sam, is a young man recently expelled from the boarding school where he lived and studied due to his rebelliousness, which emerged after his mother’s death.

Ruth and Sam have their own problems, but, as time passes and their relationship progresses, they find in each other the support and company they need. The violence and initial estrangement give way to an intense and affectionate bond of friendship, in short, family.

Classified by the film guide O Lanterninha as “painful and honest”, The Matriarch has names such as Charlotte Rampling, George Ferrier and Angela Littlejohn in its cast. The author of the work is New Zealand director Matthew J. Saville. The rating is 16 years old.
