Investing in gold can be a solid strategy to diversify your portfolio and protect it against risks.

Amid periods of uncertainty and geopolitical crises, gold once again stands out as a reliable investment option. The shiny metal has been sought after by investors due to its reputation as a safe haven in times of risk aversion in markets. As it is a scarce and limited resource in nature, it tends to maintain or increase its purchasing power over time, regardless of variations in the economy, politics or crises.

Over the past 12 months, the global scenario has been challenging, with geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and growing concerns about inflation. In this context, gold registered a significant appreciation of 24%. “Recent events have boosted prices as gold is often seen as a safe haven in turbulent times,” says Gabriel Lago, financial planner at The Hill Capital.

For experts, investing in gold can be a solid strategy to diversify your portfolio and protect it against risks. There are several ways to invest, from physically purchasing the metal in bars, coins or jewelry to acquiring securities that represent it, such as funds, futures contracts or certificates.

Beto Saadia, investment director at Nomos, highlights that a popular option is exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the price of gold, such as the ETF GOLD11, which registered an appreciation of 18.6% in the last twelve months, being traded at R$12.50. Additionally, investing in shares of gold mining companies, such as Aura Minerals (AURA33), is also a possibility.

However, it is crucial to consider individual investment objectives and risk profile before making decisions. Gold can fluctuate in the short term, which can result in losses for investors who do not think long term.

Some experts prefer to recommend fixed income investments over gold. For Jansen Costa, from Fatorial Investimentos, the metal does not offer income or cash generation. “If there is concern about a general decline in global assets, keeping money in liquidity, such as fixed income, may be a viable alternative.”
