The State of São Paulo has the first confirmed death from Yellow Fever in 2024. The record was made on March 29, according to the State Department of Health (SES). The information was confirmed to the Earth.

According to the agency, the case involved a 50-year-old man, resident of Águas de Lindóia, in the interior of São Paulo, and who was also traveling through the Monte Sião region, in Minas Gerais.

Yellow fever is a disease transmitted by wild mosquitoes, which live in forest areas and do not inhabit the urban environment of cities. The last outbreak of the disease in the State took place between 2017 and 2019. In 2017, São Paulo registered 103 infected people. In 2018, the number jumped to 524. In 2019, it dropped to 69 cases.

After confirming the first case this year, the department intensified health surveillance actions and reinforced the importance of vaccination against the disease. The Yellow Fever vaccine is part of the immunization calendar and, since April 2017, Brazil has adopted a vaccination schedule of just one dose throughout life, a measure that is in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Every person who lives in Areas with Yellow Fever Vaccine Recommendation and people who will travel to these areas must be immunized at least 10 days before traveling”, informs the SES.

Regiane de Paula, coordinator of Health Surveillance at the secretariat, states that, for those who will travel to the interior and other states, immunization is essential. “The Yellow Fever vaccine has a period of 10 days to create antibodies, therefore, anyone traveling to forest areas, going to camps, trails, waterfalls, it is extremely important to be immunized as soon as possible.”

Throughout the state, Yellow Fever coverage is 68.47%, according to data updated until Monday, 22.
